Chinanews, Kunming, May 15 - The biggest optical astronomical telescope in East Asia was successfully installed in Lijiang of Yunnan Province.The clear aperture of the telescope is 2.4 m, and it is 8 m long and some 40 tons heavy. TTL, a British company, produced the telescope, which will be used for the observation of fixed stars and galaxies.The installing was kicked off in March, 2005, in Gaomeigu Region of Lijiang, which is one of the best astronomical observation point with more than 245 clear nights every year and an altitude of 3,000 m above sea level. The tranquil atmosphere here is an advantage, too.
