Chinanews, Chengdu, Oct. 10 – Ruoergai Grassland, one of China’s most beautiful grasslands, is currently under desertification. The area influenced by desert encroachment has increased by 11.65% annually, and most lakes around the area have dried up.Ruoergai Grassland has been regarded as “kidney of China’s western plateau”. In the 1970s, the largest lake in the area covered an area of 6,000 mu (1,000 acres). Experts said that excessive human activities and weather changes have made the environment around the area deteriorated.Experts are also worried that sandstorms will occur more frequently in the coming years if people fail to improve the environmental condition of the grassland.
