Chinanews, Beijing, Mar. 15 – Sandstorm is a natural phenomenon and it cannot be stopped. It is against scientific rule for us to say that human beings should stop sandstorms, said Qin Dahe, director-general of the China Meterological Administration. While sandstorms had caused a great loss to human beings, it also brought some positive results. On the whole, there wouldn't have existed our Chinese nation if there had been no sandstorms, he added.Sandstorms had existed on earth for millions of years, while the written history of human beings had lasted for only 3,000-5,000 years. The Loess Plateau, which stretches over one million square kilometers in China, was formed by sandstorms over millions of years of process. The Yellow River, while flowing past the Loess Plateau, carried large amounts of sand with it and the sediments later formed the North China Plain. The Loess Plateau is regarded as the cradle of the Chinese civilization. If there had been no Loess Plateau, the North China Plain wouldn't have existed, nor would have the Chinese civilization. So it would be impractical to act against a natural rule that had existed for millions of years, Qin said.On the other hand, sandstorms did not bring only losses to human beings. When sandstorms moved from the Asian continent to the Pacific region, they carried some mineral substances into the air, which later fell into the ocean in the form of rain. The mineral substances helped some planktons to survive. The planktons were eaten by shrimps and fish lived on these shrimps. In the end, fish were eaten by humans. This formed a biological chain and such chain reflected an objective relation between humans and nature, regardless of whether we like it or dislike it, he said. While we can't ignore its negative consequences, it is also impractical to say that we human beings should get rid of it. What we can possibly do is to reduce its negative influence as much as we can. In developing the west region, China proposed to restore some arable land to forests and lawns. These are effective measures to deal with the sandstorm problem, Qin noted.
