Chinanews, Beijing, May 19 – The Wei River in Shaanxi Province is seriously deteriorating, according to a report from China's Central Television. The river currently still provides water for 64% of the total population, 56% of the arable land and 80% of the GDP of Shaanxi Province.Mr. Chen, 70, told this reporter about the glorious past of the river, and that local citizens now regard the river as a part of the sewage system. The reporter saw the color of the river had turned red. The local environmental protection administration has monitored the water quality of the river and found it has deteriorated in recent years. He Zhang, a senior official of the local environmental protection administration, revealed that 160 thousand tons of waste water are produced everyday in the city of Xianyang, but the local waste water recycling plant can only purify some 100 thousand tons of water. As a result, 60 thousand tons of waste water are directly discharged into the Wei River.Statistics show that more and more waste water produced in people's daily life is discharged into the Wei River. In 2006 most plants that caused water pollution were closed down, which served to remind citizens not to release waste water into the Wei River.
