Chinanews, Shijiazhuang, May 24 – After one year's investigation, the China Nuclear Engineering and Construction Group (CNEC) has decided to build a nuclear power plant in Qinhuangdao, the first nuclear power plant to be built in Hebei Province. The power plant will be built at four locations, in Funing and Changli Counties, according to information from the Hebei Provincial Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, the Hebei Youth Daily reported.Another constructor of the Hebei Nuclear Power Plant, the China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding, Co., Ltd, is still carrying out an on-site inspection in Chengde. After the inspection, experts will finally decide the construction site of the nuclear power plant.On March 21-23 and April 26-28, 2007, two experts from the CNEC’s Hebei Working Office, Chen Xueying and Ren Jianping, went to Funing and Changli counties to make an inspection of the site of the new nuclear power plant. With the information they collected from the site and after group discussions, experts finally chose four locations for the nuclear power plant, three in Funing County (one in Huangjinshan, one in Tiangezhuang, and one in Zhengzhuang), and one in the Jiuding Pheonix Mountain at the border of Changli County. The experts will complete an investigation report by June this year and in July, they will invite some other experts from the State Nuclear Power Program Design Institute to attend a meeting to assess the work, said Xu Zhenchuan, head of the nuclear power project research team at the Hebei Provincial Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense.Before this, experts from the China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding, Co., Ltd consulted with experts from the Geological Research Institute of the China Seismological Administration to make sure that the location of the nuclear power plant did not lie at earthquake region. They also searched related materials, carried out in-depth discussions and investigated the hydrological information about Qinhuangdao before they finally chose the site.In the past, most nuclear power plants in the world were built near coastal regions. Previously, Tangshan and Cangzhou, another two coastal cities in Hebei, had applied for construction of the nuclear power plant in their regions. However, experts turned down their requests as the geological conditions in these two places did not meet experts requirement for building a nuclear power plant.
